Randomized Control Trial

In Uganda, where the program was first designed by Kimanya-Ngeyo Foundation, 2,500 teachers have been trained since 2015. In 2017-2022, a randomized controlled trial (Nourani, Ashraf & Banerjee, 2025) was conducted with outstanding results:

• In the Ugandan Primary Leaving Examination (mandatory to advance to secondary education), the pass rate in treated schools rose from 51% to 75% compared to control schools.
• Increased student engagement and inquisitiveness.
• Enhancement of students' scientific competencies (analyzing hypotheses, measuring observations, and designing experiments).
• Cost-effectiveness: measured in Learning-Adjusted Years of Schooling (LAYS), it produced 9.62 LAYS per $100, placing the intervention in the top 5% of all rigorously evaluated education programs.

Research on Teachers' Learning

A follow-up case study (Murphy-Graham, Lample, Kabay & Nourani, 2026) showed that training sparks changes in beliefs and practices through:

• 1. Experiential learning of new pedagogical knowledge by engaging as active participants
• 2. Exploration of a conceptual framework on the nature of knowledge, purpose, and the role of education for improved individual & social wellbeing
• 3. Emphasis on continuous reflection about one’s beliefs, attitudes, and practices
